Kamya & Keerthana
Carnatic Vocalist, Michigan, United States

Biography

Kamya Sankar and Keerthana Sankar grew up in a musical environment from the time they were born. They could identify ragams and sing basic swarams by the age of two. In order to get a firm foundation in vocal music, Kamya & Keerthana began their music training with instruments. Kamya began her lessons in veena at the age of six and Keerthana began playing violin at the age of five. For a brief period, both were fortunate to begin their formal vocal training under Sri. T N Seshagopalan. Their biggest influences in the Carnatic field are their current Gurus, Sri. Madurai R. Sundar and Sri Delhi P. Sundarrajan. Their inspiration comes from stalwarts such as T.N. Seshagopalan, Alathoor Brothers, K.V.

Narayanaswamy, and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. Kamya and Keerthana’s dedication is mirrored in the hours of practice they put in everyday. In addition to their passion for performing, their interest extends to the technical aspects of
music, including different swaram patterns, korrapus, korvais, bhruga emphasized ragams, and pallavis.

Kamya is pursuing a biochemistry major at the University of Michigan, and hopes to continue on to Medical school in 2011. She graduated from Avondale High School at the age of 16, and was valedictorian of her class. Keerthana is a Senior at Avondale High School in Auburn Hills, MI. Keerthana is an active member of National Honor Society and is in Top 5 in her school . She hopes to go to University of Pennsylvania in 2011 and further continue on to Medical school.
